What is FSAPI.Net?
FSAPI.Net is a component used by .NET developers to access the new FamilySearch API. One or more Managed code libraries are available to developers to plug in to their applications and access FamilySearch with ease.
Who created this project?
FSAPI.Net was created by nGenesis, LLC. nGenesis is also the creator of end user products with a family history theme, and will be launching new products soon. We are also looking for partners regarding this endeavor.
Who can use FSAPI.Net?
Any developer who has an account with FamilySearch and needs to access FamilySearch web services from their .NET based application may use FSAPI.Net. Licensing terms are found within the SDK downloads, and offer free use of the libraries.
Why isn't FSAPI.Net an open source project?
nGenesis set out to create this API as a viable way for any developer or company to access FamilySearch web services. We feel that is being accomplished without the need for open source.
There are legal considerations that need careful attention when considering using an open source library in a closed source commercial application. This is the primary reason for FSAPI.Net to be a closed source project.
Will it ever be open source?
Most likely. But at the moment it can't be for legal reasons. And for legal reasons, we cannot explain the legal reasons. But hang in there, we will find a way to make this work out and are very interested in getting this into community hands. Until then, enjoy the free service!
